A 39-year-old Vancouver
woman has undergone surgery after she was attacked by a machete-wielding man
downtown.

The weapon sliced through
the woman’s shoulder and into her clavicle, Vancouver police said on Thursday.

A tenant at the Arco Hotel
on West Pender Street was slashed in the forehead during an altercation in a
third-floor suite on Monday. The man, bleeding heavily, picked up a machete and
began chasing two women down the hallway.

A third woman grabbed a
nearby bicycle and attempted to get away using the stairs. When the bike became
lodged in a doorframe, the man raised the machete for the overhand strike.

The attacker failed to
find the other women and the victim called 9-1-1.

Melvin Lee Carothers, 58,
has been arrested and appeared in court Thursday morning.
