Donna McMillan smiles as her nine-month-old-daughter, Kyla, offers up a gift ribbon that came with coats being donated at the Women’s Drop in Centre on East Hastings yesterday.

The gift of warm, waterproof jackets from clothing giant Stormtech had smiles spreading like Christmas cheer from face-to-face at the Women’s Drop-in Centre on East Hastings Street last night.

The Union Gospel Mission is distributing 1,000 of the jackets to those in the Lower Mainland who most need protection from the elements.

Dozens of women and their children were on hand to receive the black and red insulated, waterproof coats.

Donna McMillan was overjoyed at getting the early holiday gift.

"I really appreciate (the coat), it helps me out a lot. It helps a lot of people who are in need."

Organizers didn’t advertise the give-away out of fear that addicts would sell the jackets for drug money.
