Women’s hockey team gets apology from SMU president

An apology and a sponsorship for $60,000 – not a bad day for the Saint Mary’s University women’s hockey team.

The apology came from the university’s president Colin Dodds and the money came from Canadian Tire.

National media attention, a protest and enormous public censure about the role of gender equality in sports followed the university’s decision last week to cut the team due to budget constraints.

The university’s board voted on Tuesday night to reverse their decision.

“Can we repair the damage? I hope we can. It’s just going to take some time,” Dodds said at a press conference this morning announcing the sponsorship.

Veteran player Sarah Maynard said she was happy with Dodd’s apology and is optimistic about the team’s future.
