U.S. designers create unique car

U.S.-based designers have created a wooden sports car that looks like it could put Porsche or Lamborghini in the shade with its innovative construction and a staggering top speed in excess of 200 mph.

The Splinter was developed by Joe Harmon for his graduate project at the Industrial Design Course at North Carolina State University.

Wood used to be commonplace in automobiles. Today, though, we don’t see much of the versatile material in vehicles, especially not on the exterior. But that didn’t stop Harmon and his student team from creating the Splinter, a car made with wood composites.

“We aren’t trying to sell anything, we aren’t trying to save the world, and we aren’t advocating that everyone should drive a wooden car. This project is a scholastic endeavour in which we are simply trying to explore materials, learn, share ideas, and stimulate creativity,” Harmon said.
