After a week-long controversy over where the body of accused Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev would be buried and who would take the body, police said it was finally entombed by a “courageous and compassionate” person.
“As a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased,” Worcester Police said in a statement Thursday.
The 26-year-old’s body had been kept in the Graham, Putnam and Mahoney Funeral Parlors funeral home in Worcester since last week. The funeral home’s director had said he could not find a place to properly and responsibly bury Tsarnaev.
The burial of Tsarnaev was a tricky issue that many city leaders did not want a part of or get involved in.
The city manager in Cambridge had said he would not OK a burial permit for Tsarnaev and Mayor Thomas Menino also said he would not want Tsarnaev buried in a city cemetery. Gov. Deval Patrick said the issue was a family decision.
Worcester Police made an appeal Wednesday for someone to come forward and help find a place to bury Tsarnaev. He is accused of setting off bombs along with his younger brother at the Boston Marathon finish line April 15. The blasts killed three people and injured about 260 others.
Police did not say where the body was buried, but the Boston Globe reported that it was taken outside of Massachusetts.
