Worker injured

A construction worker was taken to hospital yesterday after being hit by a heavy slab of formwork at a downtown construction site.

The accident happened around 9 a.m. at the under- construction TV Towers development at Cambie and Robson streets.

Capt. Terry Nicolai with Vancouver Fire Hall No. 7 said a form for pouring concrete was leaning against a wall and fell over on the 52-year-old worker.

“He sustained a nasty head contusion that didn’t seem too serious,” said Nicolai. “He had some abdominal, pelvic and leg injuries.”

The worker was “packaged” in a man basket and a crane operator lowered him to the street where ambulances were waiting. Nicolai said he couldn’t disclose the man’s name.

Peter Barbera, manager for the site with Concord Pacific, said the Worker’s Compensation Board is investigating the accident.

“He’s okay,” Barbera said.
