World laser sailing championships coming to town

The St. Margaret Sailing Club has been named host of next year’s world laser sailing championships, marking the first time the event has been held in Canada in 28 years.

The event is one of the world’s largest and highest-profile dinghy regattas and will be held from Aug. 17 to Sept. 5, the club announced at a press conference on Friday.

The laser worlds and laser masters (35 and older) worlds will be held simultaneously and will draw close to 500 competitors.

Event co-chair Barbara Pike called the laser worlds the “largest sailing event ever held in eastern
Canada.”

“The waters of St. Margarets Bay offer what are considered some of the best water and wind for the sport in North America,” said Canadian Yachting Association president Gerry Giffin. “The laser worlds will provide a showcase for the natural assets this province has to offer the sport for future international competitions, national high performance training, as well as anyone interested in the sport.”
