Year-round schools back in session

As Calgary Board of Education modified school students filed back into the classroom yesterday, the school board is reminding drivers to slow down.

The school year officially kicked off yesterday for students from 16 public modified schools, spokesperson Ted Flitton said.

“I think sometimes people forget the difference between school zones and playgrounds zones and we just want to remind people to slow down and keep our students safe.”

Some good news for the school board, he added, is that their charter bus companies Southland Transportation and First Student Canada are well prepared to handle the modified calendar startup.

“We don’t have final numbers but they are definitely more staffed than past years. I’m not sure if it is a product of the economy and we pay good wages, but that is my understanding,” Flitton said.

The rest of the city’s schools including the Catholic School Board go back to classes early this year, slated for Aug. 27.
