Yoga instructors doing their part for Haiti relief

A pair of local yoga instructors are doing their best to raise funds for Haiti aid after the devastating earthquake two weeks ago.

Allison Conroy and fiancé John Tai, owners of Urban Fitness Movement on 10301 – 109th St., are providing yoga classes every Monday night for the months of February and March, and donating all the money raised to the Red Cross Haiti Relief Operation.

“The proceeds are a way for us to contribute to Haiti,” Tai said. “We are also asking our participants to collect some pledges to support them.”

By charging $15 per class, the couple hopes to raise a minimum of $2,000 in class fees and another $2,000 in participant pledge money.

Both have travelled in the Caribbean and taught yoga at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic. After witnessing some of the poverty on their trip firsthand, they hold regular fundraisers.

“Just knowing the amount of poverty and devastation that is a regular day-to-day thing they have to live with in Haiti, and now this?” said Conroy. “That is what spurred us on.”
