High-profile track and field events during the 2015 Pan Am Games will be held at York University in Toronto after Hamilton lost its chance to host the events.

In a press release, Mamdouh Shoukir, York University president and vice- chancellor, said the university is “thrilled about this development.”

The decision comes after Pan Am organizers decided last month to move the track events to Toronto from Hamilton for several reasons, including having the track venue closer to the athletes’ village.

Ian Troop, CEO of the organizing committee for the Games, says the move had nothing to do with a squabble between Hamilton city council and the CFL’s Tiger-Cats over the location of a stadium. On Aug. 12, Hamilton city council picked the downtown West Harbour site as its Pan Am venue, which will now be used only for soccer during the Games.

The stadium was to become the new home of the Ticats, but the team’s owner pulled his support for the project.
