Young woman dies in crash

A young woman was killed yesterday during the early morning commute after her car lost control and was struck by a gravel truck, police say.

Duty Insp. Rob Williams said the blue Dodge Neon was heading eastbound on Glenmore Trail just before 8 a.m. when it lost control on the icy roads and spun over the median before being struck by the westbound gravel truck.

Police believe the victim was 19 years old.

“It’s tragic. We believe she was killed instantly. (The driver) of the semi is pretty shaken up,” Williams said.

“The roads are icy and we believe the conditions and weather were a factor.”

EMS arrived quickly, but the woman was pronounced dead on scene, and firefighters had to extricate her from the vehicle hours after the collision.

Glenmore Trail was shut down for several hours, just reopening again before lunch while crews reconstructed the scene.

Dana Leigh, 23, was caught in the snarled up traffic but said despite the delay she was only concerned about the victim.

“That’s just terrible. I just kept thinking that could have been anyone, it’s really sad,” she said.

Williams said charges will not be laid against the driver of the gravel truck and the traffic unit is continuing the investigation. The victim’s name is being withheld until an autopsy is complete.
