An 18-year-old Burnaby man was arrested and charged yesterday with second-degree murder in the stabbing death of Deward Ponte, 15, on Sunday.
Dillon Anthony Butler made a brief appearance in Vancouver Provincial Court yesterday as investigators look for a second suspect in the stabbings that also left an 18-year-old youth in hospital.
Police responding to a call about screams on the Southside of East 33rd Avenue found Ponte and another teen suffering from knife wounds early Sunday morning.
Vancouver police spokesman Const. Tim Fanning said two groups of teenagers were involved and they didn’t seem to know each other.
"And it’s tragic that a 15-year-old has to die like that for what appears to be a couple of groups of teens who met in the night."
Fanning added that over the last 20 years he’s seen the proliferation of weapons.
"It’s not uncommon that when we (police) arrive at a call, that the area is littered with machetes, knives and bats," Fanning said.
