Sexual self-awareness is happening at a younger age each year and it can make for very confusing and uncomfortable times.
That’s why the Pride Youth Dance is being held this Sunday. The event is for meant as a safe place for gay and lesbian’s aged 25 and under.
Lydia Luk, the Gab Youth Services co-ordinator, believes it’s one of the few dances — including public school dances — where queer youth can feel comfortable.
“There are events at school and queer-youth dances, but sometimes they don’t feel safe, because those dances are very heterocentric,” Luk said. “This is something different that celebrates these youth and creates a place to be proud and have fun.”
Along with a local DJ, the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society is bringing their burlesque dancing group to provide a bit of extra entertainment. But in the end, it’s all about being yourself and having fun.
“This provides a space to celebrate and be your authentic self,” said Ken Coolen, president of the Vancouver Pride Society. “It’s great to provide a venue to the future Pride developers.”
The dance will be held at the West End Community Centre, starting at 8 p.m. and ending at midnight. Donations are welcome.
