Next Big Thing: Why you have to watch Ryan Murphy’s ‘Pose’

FX Pose Ryan Murphy

According to Deadline, TV maestro Ryan Murphy’s (“Nip/Tuck,” “Glee,” “American Horror Story”) Netflix deal worth $300 million goes into effect July 1. From that point on, the producer, writer and director behind some of TV’s greatest hits will begin working on a series of new shows and films for the streaming giant. But that doesn’t mean Murphy is done with Fox, where “9-1-1” scored a second season, or FX, home of the upcoming “Pose.”

What is ‘Pose’ about?

Set in New York during the 1980s, “Pose” is a dance musical billed as an exploration of the ball culture, luxury and literary worlds that dominated the era’s social scene. “Wait a minute,” you’re probably wondering. “What is a ‘dance musical’?” Simply put, unlike Murphy’s “Glee” in that it was practically a televised musical complete with song and dance, “Pose” will emphasize the dance itself – particularly through the lens of New York’s ‘80s ball culture.

Why you should watch ‘Pose’

That Murphy and his creative team are behind “Pose” is reason enough to check out the new FX drama. If this isn’t enough, however, consider the sheer weight of its star power (Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek, Billy Porter, Charlayne Woodard), the pop cultural significance of its setting, or the fact that “Pose” features the largest cast of transgender performers in series regular roles ever. Everyone else is going to be watching, so you won’t want to miss out.

Meet the cast of ‘Pose’

“Pose” boasts the largest-ever cast of transgender performers in series regular roles, including Mj Rodriguez, Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore, Hailie Sahar and Angelica Ross. Supporting them are Evan Peters, Kate Mara, James Van Der Beek, Charlayne Woodard and Tony Award-winner Billy Porter. Newcomers Ryan Jamaal Swain, Dyllón Burnside and Angel Bismark Curiel also feature among the show’s massive ensemble.

How to watch ‘Pose’

“Pose” premieres this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. on FX. After that, already-aired episodes will be available to stream on demand or in the FXNOW app.
