NFL: Rams hope to get back on track against Seahawks

(Reuters) – The Los Angeles Rams have returned to Southern California after 21 seasons in St. Louis, but their offense failed to make the trip in a dreadful season opener they hope to put behind them in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

The Rams were pounded 28-0 by the San Francisco 49ers last week on a night they managed just 185 total yards, muting the excitement of their move back to the West Coast.

Pro Bowl running back Todd Gurley was most noticeably ineffective in the team’s attack. The talented runner never found room to roam as his big-play ability was absent.

“I felt like some of the runs got busted up a little early,” Gurley told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week regarding his 17-rush, 47-yard performance.

“I feel like I was trying to do too much, or wasn’t patient enough in my reads.

“I’ve just got to stick to the game plan, and just know that everything is going to be fine, and we’re going to break one.”

Gurley took the National Football League by storm last year as a rookie when he scampered for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 13 games.

He was the face of the team’s relocation, and will be the focal point when the Rams try to get on track in their home opener against Seattle.

Los Angeles is hopeful their passing game can surface with quarterback Case Keenum to free Gurley. “It’s all tied together,” said Rams coach Jeff Fisher. “Case makes a good decision, converts a third down, then we get another opportunity to hand the ball off to Todd.

“We just need to be in a position where we can keep feeding (Gurley).”

The franchise drafted quarterback Jared Goff with the top overall pick of this past draft, but the rookie proved unfit to take the reins during the pre season and started the campaign as the third-string QB. He has been promoted to the No. 2 signal-caller heading into this week. “Anything can happen and I’ll be ready if my number is called,” Goff said.
