NFL Week 14 roundup: Lions move into first, Titans upset Broncos

So far, NFL Week 14 has boasted some very interesting results. Here’s a look at the early action:

Miami 26, Arizona 23

Kenny Stills caught a heave from backup Matt Moore with 37 seconds left and dove to the Cardinals’ (5-7-1) 1-yard line to set up a 21-yard Andrew Franks field goal to win the game. Moore entered the game after Ryan Tannehill (15-for-20, 195 yards, 3 TD, INT) suffered a knee injury. David Johnson set an NFL record by beginning the season with 13 straight 100-plus yard games. He had 25 touches for 121 yards in defeat. The Dolphins (8-5) put themselves in a great position to harry the Broncos in the AFC wild-card race.

Washington 27, Philadelphia 22

Kirk Cousins (14-for-21, 234 yards, 2 TD, INT) had his seventh career fourth-quarter comeback. After the Eagles (5-8) successfully made a 41-yard field goal with Trey Burton acting as an emergency third team long snapper, Chris Thompson scored on a 25-yard run to put Washington (7-5-1) up five with 1:53 remaining. The Eagles drove into the red zone before Carson Wentz (32-for-46, 314 yards, TD, INT) was sacked and stripped by Ryan Kerrigan. DeSean Jackson had an 80-yard touchdown catch for the second time against his former team.

Minnesota 25, Jacksonville 16

The Vikings (7-6) and Jaguars (2-11) kicked seven straight field goals to begin this game before touchdowns finally broke out in the second half. The Vikings offense and Sam Bradford (24-for-34, 292 yards, TD) had their best game in months and it led to the second win in their last eight games. The victory keeps the struggling team in the NFC wild-card race and just two games behind Detroit with three games remaining.

Tennessee 13, Denver 10

The Broncos (8-5) endangered their playoff chances by losing for the third time in five weeks in Tennessee. The Titans (7-6) meanwhile, saw both the Houston-Indianapolis result and this game go in their favor. DeMarco Murray had 92 rushing yards and a touchdown, while new signing Justin Forsett was the Broncos’ leading rusher with just six carries for 17 yards. The Titans built a 13-0 first half lead that held up after they forced a fumble on Denver’s final drive.

Pittsburgh 27, Buffalo 20

The Steelers (8-5) won their fourth in a row under snowy conditions in Buffalo. Le’Veon Bell frolicked to 236 rushing yards, 62 receiving yards and three touchdowns in Mike Tomlin’s 100th career victory. The Bills (6-7) who dropped their second straight despite a late comeback attempt. The weather didn’t translate into the same success on the ground for Buffalo, with LeSean McCoy limited to 27 yards on 12 carries.

Carolina 28, San Diego 16

The Panthers (5-8) built a 26-7 lead, but it suddenly looked in jeopardy when, after it had been narrowed to 26-16, rookie Trovon Reed intercepted Cam Newton (10-for-27, TD, INT) at the goal line, got up and returned in all the way for a Chargers (5-8) touchdown, before being ruled down by contact on the initial pick. On the following drive, Philip Rivers (21-for-39, 236, 2 TD, 3 INT) was sacked in the end zone and what looked like a turning point was gone.

Cincinnati 23, Cleveland 10

Robert Griffin III (12-for-28, 104 yards, INT, rush TD) took the field for the first time since Week 1, but nothing else changed in Cleveland. The Browns (0-13) averaged 7.7 yards per rush and 2.7 yards per pass, and appropriately called 31 passes and 21 rushes. Tyler Eifert caught two touchdowns as the Bengals (5-7-1) notched consecutive victories for the first time in 2016.

Detroit 20, Chicago 17

Matthew Stafford (21-for-35, 221 yards, TD, 2 INT) threw a pick-six to Cre’von LeBlanc to see the Bears (3-10) take a 17-13 lead in the fourth quarter, but made up for it with a rambling 7-yard touchdown scramble with 3:20 remaining. Chicago’s ensuing drive ended on fourth down when Josh Bellamy couldn’t pull in Matt Barkley’s (20-for-32, 212 yards, TD) pass. The Lions (9-4) have won eight of their last nine games.

Houston 22, Indianapolis 17

The Texans (7-6) gave themselves a big advantage in the final weeks of the season, and came close to ensuring that the AFC South will come down to their season finale against the Titans, whom they have already beaten once this season. The Colts (6-7) were stopped when attempting a screen on fourth down with 1:20 remaining. Houston won the rushing battle 185 yards to 83, with Lamar Miller carrying the ball 21 times for 107 yards and a score.
