NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s decision to accept the league’s punishment on Deflategate is not related to Tom Brady possibly getting his four-game suspension reduced.

“We’ve had plenty of discussions over the last couple of weeks and this was his initiative andsomething he wanted to do,” Goodell said.

Goodell did not say whether or not he would nix the plan to have him be the arbitrator of Brady’s appeal, which was filed by the NFLPA and is still pending.

“There’s a process in place to what we want to follow,” Goodell said. “The key for us is to allow any information that Tom Brady and his representatives have. I look forward to hearing directly from Tom on that, and if there’s any new information or any information he can bring more clarity to something that wasn’t considered in the Wells Report. I’m not going to get into hypotheticals, but that’s the reason for the process and why we continue to have an open mind and make sure we’re going to do everything possible to understand all the facts.”

The Patriots punishment, which will be levied in full, takes away the team’s first round draft pick in 2016 and fourth rounder in 2017. It also fines the team $1 million.

The Pats of course are repeat offenders, and got similar punishment in 2007 for what was dubbed “Spygate.” They were fined$750,000 ($500,000 for head coach BillBelichick, $250,000 for the team) and surrendered their first-round draft pick.

The hearing will likely take place before training camp begins this summer, but no date has been made yet for Goodell to meet with Brady.
