NJ fifth-graders suspended for alleged bomb plot

Five fifth-grade students in Clifton, New Jersey, have been arrested for allegedly planning to bomb a local high school.

Clifton police said administrators discovered that the five students at School 11 had allegedly written plans to attack Clifton High School, NBC New York reported, adding that it was unclear what led to the discovery of the plans.

Police said the students brought a device to school and were allegedly planning to use it during a field trip to the high school, the Daily Mail reported in a related article. That device was determined to be non-explosive, but investigators say that the students’ intentions were not meant as a prank, the Daily Mail added.

Police said to NBC that the children have been released to the custody of their parents, NBC reported, also stating that they have been suspended from school. The students were all between 10 and 11 years old, and their ages prohibit them from being named, the Daily Mail reported.

School district officials could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday evening, NBC added, also reporting that police are investigating.
