No charges to be laid in Neepawa Natives hockey hazing incident

Neepawa RCMP say no charges will be laid after a team was accused of assaulting a player during a hazing incident.

The incident, which happened in late September, set off a wave of parental and media outrage after a 15-year-old boy and his parents went public about the incident, in which they claimed the teen had been forced to parade around the locker room with a water bottle carrier tied to his scrotum. They also claimed seven teens in total were subjected to the treatment.

The resulting scandal saw Assistant Coach Brad Biggers resign from the team, after four players said he was in the room when it happened. As well, The Manitoba Junior Hockey League suspended 16 players as well as the head coach.

The teen and his parents have not been named.

RCMP Cpt. Miles Hiebert said in a press release that RCMP investigators conducted an “in-depth investigation into the alleged incident.”

“The results of this investigation were then submitted to the Office of the Crown Attorney for review…” he added.

Cpl. Hiebert said no charges will be filed against players or staff of the team after recommendations from the Crown Attorney’s office.

“As a number of persons involved are minors, and to insure the privacy of the complainant, no further information can be released regarding the details of this investigation.”
