No federal funding for stadium projects: Baird to city

There is no stadium cash available from the federal government, according to the city manager.

Reading from a letter sent from Infrastructure Minister John Baird’s office, city manager Kent Kirkpatrick told city councillors they would have to look for the infrastructure stimulus funding if the city wants money to build a new stadium.

However, Kirkpatrick said that neither the Lansdowne Live nor the Senators Sports and Entertainment proposal would fit the criteria to receive infrastructure funding.

“Both governments are very serious about the requirement for projects built under the economic stimulus program to be finished, to be commissioned, used for the purpose they were intended, and for the payments payment to be made prior to the end of 2011,” he said.

Kirkpatrick said it would be extremely risky to rush a the projects through to fit that timeline and both governments have stated that they would not match funds for projects that go beyond that deadline.
