Ivanka Trump condemned sexual harassment in the workplace during a speech on women’s empowerment in Japan on Friday and the irony was not lost on Twitter.
“All too often, our workplace culture fails to treat women with appropriate respect,” the first daughter said at the World Assembly for Women in Tokyo.
“This takes many forms, including harassment, which can never be tolerated,” she added, according to AFP.
Her comments came at a sensitive time the concept of sexual harassment in the workplace. Dozens of women have come forward in recent days to share their stories of sexual harassment, often using the #MeToo hashtag on social media. Women have been empowered to come forward to expose the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.
But despite her well-intentioned comments, Ivanka Trump didn’t get a positive response from Twitter, as many were quick to point out her father, President Donald Trump’s, history of misogyny and treating women poorly.
Trump’s sexism has been well documented throughout at least the last three decades. He’s objectified women, called them names like “fat pig,” “dogs” and “slobs.” Check out this timeline detailing the many times Trump was caught defiling women.
And of course, the 2005 “Access Hollywood” tape where a hot mic caught Trump telling the show’s former host, Billy Bush, that he would grab women “by the pussy” came up.
