No serious injuries after van plunges into Rideau Canal

A Chevy Venture minivan plunged about 10 feet into the near-empty Rideau Canal Monday afternoon.

At 4:40 p.m., a vehicle was travelling on Colonel By Drive between Clegg and Seneca Streets when it ended up in the Rideau Canal.

The canal was still fairly empty, said Ottawa police Const. J.P. Vincelette. “It’s still at the low level. The water is knee-deep at most.

“It was a bit extraordinary.”

The male driver was able to get out of the vehicle by himself, but his passenger required assistance. Neither suffered serious injuries.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
