A new TTC e-mail alert system notifying riders of delays and service interruptions is the latest step in providing the kind of transit service Torontonians expect, says TTC chief general manager Gary Webster.
TTC riders can now go to ttc.ca and sign up for e-alerts that will tell them about trouble on the subway or Scarborough RT.
The alerts, which can be customized to a particular stop or station, will be extended to surface routes later this year.
Riders will get information on delays and system malfunctions so they can decide whether to take a different route, a different mode of transport or delay their trip.
Webster says such services are in demand as riders become aware of transit technology advances elsewhere.
“Customer expectation is different today. (They) want all the bells and whistles that are everywhere in the world,” he said.
TTC e-mail alerts will focus on interruptions that last 15 minutes or longer. Later this year, the service will also be made available as text messages for cellphone users without Internet access. Riders will be able to see which parts of the system are affected and whether shuttle buses are running.
