Word on the street is that a pack of angry clowns will descend on the Union Square movie theater on Thursday night in protest of the horror movie IT, which the clowns say is costing them jobs.
Clowns in Town owner John Nelson is reportedly leading the push, telling News 4 New York that his businesses has seen multiple cancellations recently. The reason, Nelson claims, is because the horror movie is deterring potential customers from hiring clowns.
“Last week, my partner and I had six cancellations of birthday parties,” he told News 4. “I have heard from reports from other clowns, in New York and other cities, that they have been canceled as well.”
The 2017 film, out in theaters now, is a remake of the 1990 supernatural horror series starring Tim Curry as an evil clown that targets a group of young children. That show was based on a 1986 Stephen King novel. One of the reasons Nelson’s peeved at the reboot, according to News 4, is that a Google search of “clowns” leads possible clients to images of scary clowns.
Nelson, his Clowns in Town partner, and a group of other local clowns will reportedly rally outside Union Square Regal Cinema on Thursday night in the hope of raising awareness about friendly clowns.
“Our hope is to raise enough awareness so when people think of clowns they won’t think of scary murderers but people who dedicate their lives to bringing joy,” Nelson told the outlet.
