Nothing normal about new ballet

Love Lies Bleeding, a fantastical creation by the Alberta Ballet Company, is not your typical ballet.

For those of us who hear the word ballet and immediately picture men and women prancing around the stage in tights and tutus, prepare to be pleasantly surprised by Love Lies Bleeding, which features fire-breathing roller skates, gold lame costumes and over the top glitz.

Do not expect your grandmother’s ballet.

Set to the music of Elton John, Love Lies Bleeding is a ballet-musical hybrid that has more in common with rock-musicals like the Who’s Tommy or American Idiot (finally opening this December in Toronto!).

Love Lies Bleeding opens Nov. 8 at Toronto’s Sony Centre and runs only until Nov. 12.

It is sure to become one of the most talked about shows this fall.

Don’t forget the Canadian premiere of FELA, the musical story of Fela Kuti — the Nigerian founder of the musical genre Afrobeat, closes on Nov. 6.

For those who are looking to add a bit of soul into their week, FELA tickets start at only $35 via Sceneopolis.

Every week, Sceneopolis.com — a new arts and culture subscription website — will bring you the latest from stages across the city. Use discount code: metro5 to save $5 on a subscription!
