HALIFAX, N.S. – The Nova Scotia government says it will implement a two-year freeze on salaries for members of the legislature, senior civil servants and political staff.
The changes will be contained in the Financial Measures Act which will be tabled after the provincial budget is introduced on Thursday.
In a news release, deputy premier Frank Corbett says with a deficit of $590 million, the government must be prepared to “lead by example.”
The New Democrats have also proclaimed changes that received royal ascent under the previous Conservative government in 2007, that annual salaries and indemnities for house members be increased by the same percentage as civil servants.
Corbett says there are no increases as a result of today’s proclamation.
Members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly currently make $86,000 a year.
