The weeks and weeks of “are they or aren’t they?” gossip and questions are over: Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher are getting a divorce.
“It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton,” Moore said in statement released by her publicist today. “As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation.”
This comes after reports that Moore, 49, and Kutcher, 33, escaped to the Caribbean, hiding out at Bruce Willis’ Turks and Caicos home after the uproar over Kutcher’s Twitter gaffe — in which he stood up for Penn State football coach Joe Paterno after Paterno was fired amidst a child-abuse sex scandal, according to Us Weekly. “They had to get away. Ashton’s tweeting [about Penn State] was the last straw,” a source says. Of course, the retreat also gave the couple a chance to address their marital difficulties stemming from Kutcher’s infidelity scandal. “Things have been very strained,” the source adds, “[but] they’re trying to figure things out.”
And figure it out they did. How sad.
