Amazon has moved from targeting online shoppers to going after bored people waiting for the subway. Ad Week reports that starting today, the digial ads that started popping up underground earlier this year are being converted to digital pop-up stores.
The ads will become swipeable screens displaying the online retailer’s gift guide. Most of what’s featured are electronics, like Sony headphones or Bose speakers. If a subway rider sees something he or she wants to buy, they can key in their email or phone number on the screen to send themselves the link, or they can simply scan the QR code.
Amazon is the first retailer who is marketing their gift guide in this way, and while it’s too early to tell what the success rate will be, as Internet service is expanded to more stations, we can expect more retailers to experiment with this type of shopping.
