Several shootings were reported in Brooklyn in the early morning hours before the West Indian Day Parade, according to the NYPD.
A 55-year-old man was shot and killed around 3:30 a.m. Monday in Crown Heights, according to police. A suspect is in custody, and the department continues to gather information on other shootings in the area before the parade started.
Later Monday morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio said 4,000 police officers were assigned to the parade route. More than 1 million people are expected to attend the parade along Eastern Parkway.
