The NYPD arrested a homeless man Sunday they believe attempted to choke a woman in the subway.
A homeless man was arrested early Sunday afternoon after allegedly trying to choke a 22-year-old woman in the 59th Street and Lexington Avenue subway station, police said.
Lionel Pope, 31, was observed pushing and shoving people on the north and south-bound platforms of the train. Just before 2 p.m., Pope attacked a woman on the mezzanine level, choking her, then bending her to the ground and punching her on the back, police said.
Pope is living at the Bellevue Men’s Shelter on East 30th Street, police said. He was arrested on charges of criminal obstruction of breathing, resisting arrest and assault — all misdemeanor charges.
Records show Pope was arrested three days before the alleged attack, and two other times earlier in 2014 in Brooklyn. Charges were not listed.
