NYPD rescues dog from water, reunites with owner

Chase, a German shepherd found swimming in Gravesend Bay early Friday morning, is now safe at home, after some quick-acting officers were able to pull him from the waters.

Officers responded to a 911 call just after 6:30 a.m. Friday morning, reporting the 1-and-a-half year old dog seen in the water.

Divers were able to safely recover the dog, who was apparently in healthy condition. The dog was brought on board an NYPD boat and brought to Harbor Charlie in Brooklyn.

He was later reunited with his owners, who live in Coney Island — miles from where he was spotted.

“I was terrified. I was scared. I was just hoping he was ok,” Miguel Vazquez, the dog’s owner, told CBS News.

Vazquez told CBS that the family believed the dog got spooked by bad weather and somehow got out of their backyard.

“For someone else’s dog, they’re just the heroes. I really want to thank them very much because they brought our dog home and it wouldn’t have been the same without him. It would’ve been an empty spot,” Miguel said.
