Police said an officer temporarily reassigned for the Summer All Out program shot a suspect who slammed into two NYPD cars and hit a cop in Brooklyn on Thursday.
Officer James Hasper shot Raymond Martinez in the shoulder after he fled a traffic stop around 7:30 p.m. in Canarsie, police said.
Martinez, 46, was driving a Chevy Tahoe when he went on the wrong side of the road and ran a red light at Flatlands Avenue and Rockaway Parkway in front of an unmarked police car, the NYPD said.
Gang squad members in the unmarked car tried to stop Martinez, who rammed into their vehicle and an officer who was trying to exit it, police said.
Martinez then ran into a dead end on East 105th Street, police said. He continued to flee, striking a fire hydrant and driving through an empty lot, eventually rear-ending a car stopped in traffic on Rockaway Parkway, the NYPD said.
He allegedly backed up and hit a second patrol car, police said. Hasper then joined the pursuit, shooting Martinez once.
Police said Martinez was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition and charges are pending. The NYPD said he has 12 prior arrests. It’s not clear if he has an attorney.
Three officers injured in the chase were taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition.
Hasper, who was temporarily reassigned from the barricade unit to patrol in Brooklyn, was on his way to his new post when he observed the chase, police said. The NYPD reassigned 313 officers to foot patrols this month to combat crime in certain neighborhoods.
