Weeks before New York City launches its municipal ID program, officials confirmed on Friday that the new card would be accepted as valid documentation by the Police Department.

The card, which is expected launch in mid January, will be available to all New York City residents, but advocates pushing for the new ID long argued that it will be a boon for immigrant, homeless, transgender and elderly New Yorkers who lack government-provided photo ID.

Whereas police used to arrest an individual without proper ID until they could verify the person’s name and residence, the NYPD will accept the new card as sufficient identification for summons issuances, desk appearances tickets and property claims.

Similarly, city officials argued that the card will encourage formerly undocumented residents to report crimes and interact more openly with the police.

“It is part of our larger mission to forge public trust with the communities we serve,” Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said in a statement.

The card will only be recognized in New York City by city agencies, and cannot be used as a drivers license or ID for air travel.
