The World Trade Center area will be closed off Saturday night, police commissioner Ray Kelly said this afternoon at a counterterrorism presentation at One Police Plaza.
The area from West Street to Broadway, and from Murray Street to Cortland Street, will be “frozen” Saturday evening, Kelly said, as police prepare for the Sunday ceremony.
Thousands of officers — including police divers checking piers, sniper patrols, radiation detectors and hostage negotiatiors — will be on hand to secure the area for Sunday, when two presidents and scores of New Yorkers will attend the ceremony.
The added precautions are a result of Navy SEALS, after killing Osama bin Laden, finding plans for a terror attack in New York on the tenth anniversary of the attacks.
“Given that, we had to take precautions,” Kelly said.
