O’Brien, Hume, Hunter tread lightly on expense accounts

Based on expenses charged to the city, Mayor Larry O’Brien, Alta Vista Coun. Peter Hume and Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Gord Hunter, were the most frugal members of city council last year.

According to an annual statement of remuneration and expenses paid to members of council to be discussed Tuesday, O’Brien, Hume and Hunter all claimed zero council-related or other expenses in 2009.

By contrast, Osgoode Ward Coun. Doug Thompson claimed the most with $12,388. Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Glenn Brooks claimed $7,495, while Rideau-Vanier Coun. Georges Bédard claimed $7,165.

Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches was the only councillor who declined the $6,900 car allowance.

Expenses paid to councillors include reimbursements for out-of-pocket expenses incurred during travel or for hospitality and office supplies.

“Other expenses” are reimbursements made for expenses incurred by attending events on behalf of a city-related organization, such as the Ottawa Police Services Board.

The report does not report councillor office budgets. That report will be released by March 31.
