Occupy Boston brings out Twitter spam

Occupy Boston has brought the “sex bots” to the Twitterverse since the protests have become a hot topic on the social media scene.

Masked with names like “AprilRitchie1,” the Twitter accounts catch user attention with seductive profile pictures and comments about Occupy Boston.

When Twitter-users click on the female profiles, however, links embedded in their personal information drag them to sites like “HornyMatches.com.”

According to social media expert David Gerzof Richard, spam robots like these on Twitter can easily mimic real conversations in an effort to lure people to swanky sites.

With the Occupy Boston “hashtag” getting so much traffic, he said, more companies use it as an opportunity to drive Web hits.

Richard said wherever peoples’ eyeballs are, that’s where the spammers set up.

Richard said it’s easy for companies to set up multiple, automatic accounts that send out similar messages.
