Off-duty Halifax police officer killed in Truro crash

Halifax Regional Police have confirmed that one of their officers was killed Tuesday night in a head-on collision near Truro.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a member of our Halifax Regional Police family,” said police spokesman Brian Palmeter in a release. “As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time not only for the officer’s family but for everyone in the Department.”

RCMP say a minivan was travelling the wrong way down Highway 104 in heavy fog when it was struck by an oncoming tractor-trailer. The crash happened about two kilometres outside of Truro.

The officer, whose name is not being released at the request of the family, was not on duty at the time of the accident, said Palmeter.

The investigation into the crash is being handled by Colchester RCMP.
