An RCMP officer shot and killed a man in Duncan, B.C., police announced on Monday.
Officers arrived at the Duncan Trailer Park shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday in response to a hung-up 9-1-1 call. A 39-year-old man holding a knife greeted them.
The Mounties engaged the man in a face-to-face conversation in an attempt to de-escalate the situation, according to Cpl. Darren A. Lagan.
When that failed to calm the man down, police used a Taser without success. One of the Mounties then shot the man.
He was transported to Cowichan District Hospital where he later died.
The man’s immediate family has been notified and asked that his name not be released.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating the death and the B.C. Coroner’s Service will be conducting an autopsy in the near future.
