BEIJING (Reuters) – Canada’s Rachel Homan said she is still struggling with the disappointment of missing the curling mixed doubles semi-finals with partner John Morris after coming up just short against eventual champions Italy in their final group game at the Beijing Olympics.
The pair fell 8-7 to the Italians on Feb. 7 after losing the close measure in the extra end as her final throw rolled a few millimetres too far, ending Canada’s hopes of retaining gold.
Taking to social media to congratulate compatriot and childhood friend Ivanie Blondin on winning gold in the women’s speed skating team pursuit event, Homan said the curling defeat still rankled with her.
“Being completely honest because I know many athletes have felt this but I’m in the deepest of black holes wishing we could have found another centimetre for Canada,” she tweeted.
“Know that I am cheering hard for every athlete in Beijing right now but personally struggling beyond words,” added Homan, who was skip when Canada finished sixth in the women’s team event at the Pyeongchang Games in 2018.
“I never take the maple leaf for granted and am grateful for the chance to fight for you all.”
