An SUV carrying four people overturned on the Long Island Expressway in Queens early New Year’s morning, killing one passenger and leaving the driver in critical condition.

The crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway near Parsons Boulevard, police said.

The 2001 Nissan Xterra struck the median, traveled across three traffic lanes and then struck a curb before overturning and landing with its roof against a tree, police said.

The front seat passenger, a 26-year-old male, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 31-year-old male, was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in critical condition with trauma to the head and body.

Two rear seat passengers were also taken to the hospital. They are in stable condition with minor injuries, police said.

The identity of the deceased passenger has not been released pending family notification. The investigation is ongoing.
