Ontario’s aboriginal youth need to know own history: Chief

It is important that aboriginal students learn their true history, insists Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse.

“The history that has been captured and is being presented to students in many of the provincial school systems and universities doesn’t reflect the true First Nations history,” said Toulouse yesterday at the opening event of Aboriginal Awareness Week at Carleton University. “It’s just nowhere near what our real history is.”

Toulouse said young people need to know about the treaties that were signed between their nations and the Canadian government. He said the treaties were about sharing the land and resources, but to this day, they have not seen the kind of sharing agreed upon. People also need to know about the Indian Act, which dictates the lives of First Nations people, said Toulouse.
