Ottawa runs for the Cure to breast cancer

Sunday’s Run for the Cure marks a happy occasion of sorts for Eva Nagy.

After all, it will be the first time in years that her whole family is taking part in the event in good health.

In 2008, Nagy, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer earlier that year, participated with “a going-bald head.”

In 2009, she wore her IV in a fanny pack while her husband, Duncan, also battled cancer.

But this year, the family of four is taking part as Nagy leads a 30-person team, Cancer Sucks.

At age 41, she was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer after discovering a puckering on her breast.

She underwent a bilateral mastectomy and had her lymph nodes removed, but suffered complications.

She credits her support system, doctors and physiotherapy for her recovery.

“We need to raise awareness,” she said. “Don’t stop at the ultrasound. If you feel something is wrong, get it checked.

“Trust your gut. Your gut will tell you if something is wrong.”
