Ovechkin tricks Sens

Washington 7, Ottawa 4

The Skinny: Down by four goals going into the third period, the Senators fought back with a couple of markers to cut into the Washington Capitals’ lead but ended up falling short for another road loss.

The Hat Trick: Alexander Ovechkin led the Capitals with a three-goal effort, including his league high 36th marker of the year. The Russian forward has scored 23 of his 36 goals at the Verizon Centre in Washington.

Alfie’s Milestone: Ottawa team captain Daniel Alfredsson scored two goals while playing in his 900th career game for the Senators. Besides Joe Sakic (Colorado), Mike Modano (Dallas) and Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit), no other active player has suited up for 900 games with the same team.

Super Supremacy:
The Capitals have now won six consecutive contests on Super Bowl Sunday dating back to 2004 and are 12-3-1 over the last 16 seasons playing at home on the big day.

The League’s Best: The Caps lead the NHL in several categories. Besides Ovechkin and his goal production, defenceman Mike Green picked up his league-high 15th goal of the season. Washington has the best home record in the East at (21-3-1).

The Next Game: The Senators return home tomorrow night to face the Los Angeles Kings at Scotiabank Place.
