Overnight NYC fires leave multiple injuries, large damage

Large fires in Brooklyn and Queens on Monday night have left multiple people hospitalized, one dog dead and several structures completely ravaged.

The first fire, which broke out around 10:45 p.m. on Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg, was a two-alarm blaze that left seven people hospitalized and a family’s dog killed in the incident, theNew York Daily Newsreported.

The fire started on the first floor of a six-story apartment building and caused heavy smoke that rose to the upper levels, trapping residents inside, FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Woods said to the Daily News.

“The smoke was so bad I couldn’t see anything. I couldn’t even breathe,” resident Nadia Roman was quoted by the Daily News.

Authorities had the flames under control shortly before midnight, an FDNY spokesman said to the Daily News.

That fire, though, was followed by a second blaze in Queens that was exacerbated by gusty winds that had embers flying in the air as the fire burned two houses and three garages on 91stStreet,NBC4reported.

The fire, which began around 2 a.m., required 150 firefighters on the scene to combat the blaze, NBC4 added, also stating that six of those firefighters suffered minor injuries.

“I looked out the window and I see one house was on fire — that happened for 6 or 7 minutes — and then the other house went on fire too, because there was a lot of wind,” an area resident was quoted by NBC4.

None of the inhabitants were injured, according to NBC4, but fire trucks were still blocking area streets Tuesday morning as winds were picking up again.

The cause of the fire was unknown, NBC4 added.
