Every holiday season, bad things happen with packages. Sometimes, they’re taken right off people’s doorsteps. And, in other cases, they’re never delivered at all.

Federal prosecutors in New York say that one Ozone Park mailman opted for the latter, tossing hundreds of pieces of mail into the garbage —because he simply couldn’t handle the stress of it all.

The New York Post reported that “Daniel Darby, 25, was ‘overwhelmed’ by the uptick in his early December mail,” so much so that he”allegedly stuffed the holiday mail in the bags and dumped them in a residential garbage can.”

WABCadded that Darby admitted to federal authorities that he threw away “more than a thousand” pieces of mail to make the incessant deluge of seasonal dispatches go away.

It only went away for a short while, though.

The investigation into Darby was prompted when the mail was discovered by a passerby in the garbage can, NBC New Yorkreported.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.
