4. We stumble into The Penny Farthing (103 Third Ave.), a big bar named after an old bicycle. With its ample atmosphere and wide-berthed booths, this is a good spot for large groups, and we hang about topside for a while, pounding beers and munching on Little Smokies (a plate full of cocktail weiners, topped with a zesty beer cheese). Later on, for a more intimate experience, we travel downstairs to the subterranean lounge called PF13. Down here, low-light candles accent a secret stone facade; and the synth-pop soundtrack — when are you not happy to wax bombastic over hot Eddie Murphy tracks? — brings the whole thing back down to earth.
