Patriots tight end Michael Williams might not get to participate in what could be the NFL’s top tight end unit in 2016 as he suffered a potential season-ending injury during OTAs this week.

The Boston Globe reported that Williams tore his left ACL and will likely be placed on injured reserve.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss offered up just a little hope that Williams’ injury is not of the”season-ending” variety. Reiss explained that Williams is awaiting a second opinion in hopes of “more promising news.”

Williams was set to be the No. 3 tight end in the Patriots system, only trailing Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett on the depth chart.

Wiliamsstarted in nine games with the Pats this past season. He recorded three catches for 26 but did damage in the run game as a blocker.
