PC hopefuls oppose tax harmonization

The four contenders to lead Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives agree they oppose the harmonizing of the province’s eight per cent sales tax with the five per cent GST, but none would eliminate it if the party wins the 2011 election.

The first question put to the leadership hopefuls at the University of Western Ontario Thursday night was would they reverse the merging of the two sales taxes.

While all said they would fight the majority Liberal government’s plan to merge the taxes, only Frank Klees offered any hope of immediate tax relief for Ontario consumers.

Klees was joined in the debate by Christine Elliott, Tim Hudak and Randy Hillier.
