People warned to stay off Ottawa River after truck goes through ice

Ottawa police, paramedics and the fire department issued a joint warning Tuesday morning for people to stay off the ice after a man is presumed drowned when his vehicle went through the ice into the Ottawa River.

The incident, which occurred Monday, night, is the second time in just over a week that a person has died when their vehicle went through the ice.

Police returned to an area just off of Petrie Island Tuesday morning to assess whether it was safe to dive, said Ottawa Police Const. Alain Boucher.

Police said on Monday evening, several people were removing fishing huts from the ice when a towing vehicle broke through the ice.

The driver, who Boucher said is a 45-year-old man, is missing and presumed to have drowned.
Police have not released his name.
