Petition sparks review of overnight parking ban

HRM’s controversial winter parking ban is under review.

Municipal staff will be looking over the current policy surrounding the ban in effect throughout HRM during the winter months.

Council voted overwhelmingly in favour of the review at last night’s regional council meeting after Halifax Downtown Coun. Dawn Sloane brought forward a petition signed by 374 HRM residents opposed to the ban.

The petition demanded city hall stop ticketing people for parking on the street when there is no snow on the ground.

The report must be completed within 30 days, at which point it could be added to an upcoming council agenda, Sloane explained.

“Hopefully we can try to change things,” she said. “Obviously, this thing has legs, and it’s moving.”

John Wesley Chisholm, who organized the online petition, attended yesterday’s session and was pleased with the effect it seemed to have on the municipality’s 23 councillors.

“It’s a start,” he said, adding that 30 days still seems like a long time, considering people are still being ticketed every night.
